Shortage of Competition

I am pretty competitive… and that’s a common trait amongst business owners.

I think being competitive is a huge advantage when running a business… but I also like to be smart about how I compete.

That’s one of the reasons I love working in the trades… there’s not nearly as much competition as people think, and to be brutally honest, the competition generally isn’t as good.

There are two things worth exploring here…

The first is the lack of competition… the reality is, America is dead set on college.  People are told you HAVE to go to college.  There is a stigma around people that don’t graduate.

I think they outlined it really well in this article – https://www.uscannenbergmedia.com/2021/07/02/we-should-advocate-for-trade-schools-just-as-much-as-college-especially-after-a-pandemic/

It’s something that Mike Rowe, from Dirty Jobs, talks about pretty regularly.

And as a college dropout who’s made millions, I can tell you first hand… that stigma is ridiculous.

However, that stigma has also helped me.  It’s lead to a shortage of contractors… which is what causes the competition not to be as good.

When there is a gap in the supply in demand, people will try to fill that gap.  The problem is that a lot of the people trying to fill that gap don’t have the skills to do it properly.

We’ve all heard of contractors promising jobs they couldn’t complete, but more than that, there are many contractors out there that haven’t spent nearly as much time working on their business as they have their craft.

It creates the perfect opportunity.  There are fewer competitors in the market, and those competitors often times are focused on being great at their skill… but not great at the business.

Focusing on both, is what has allowed me (and the 45+ students we’ve help launch shops for) to really succeed at incredible levels in such a short time.

If you’re considering starting a business, I can tell you with confidence… the trades is the place to be.
